2010 - 2011 Season

2011 Alumni Game Goes to the "Old Guys" 10-9
As it neared game time, the Twin Ponds lobby began to fill with former teammates and friends that haven't seen each other for a while.  Despite the feel good atmosphere, the alumni team quickly made their way to their locker room and began the process of putting the pads and game faces on.  They knew that they had to prove they still had  to show the "young guys" that they were still able competitors.  As they took to the ice and the game started, it didn't take long to make their point by scoring first.  The game would ultimately be a see-saw game that went back and forth until the final buzzer.  The score going into the final stanza was 5-5, and the young guys thought that their physical conditioning would pay off, but as the period went on, the veterans would continue to show their scoring prowess.  With five minutes left, the young guys built a 2 goal cushion, and felt that the victory was in hand, but the veterans never gave up and tied it up with two late goals for their own.  And just like that, the young team found themselves in the scenario that they were all to familiar with....another tie.  But with just a little over a minute left, the Old Timers netted a go ahead goal.  The young club dug deep, and with their goalie pulled, threw everything they had at the alumni team, but were unable to capitalize.  The Alumni Team poured onto the ice to celebrate their much deserved win.  While a total of 19 goals were scored, Alum Katz and current Freshman Charlie Goldburg stole the scoring show be each getting hat tricks in the game.

Alumni Game Scheduled for March 5th
Each year, the Hockey Club invites past participants of the team to scrape the rust off their blades and to play in an alumni game against the current team.  This year's game will be played at Twin Ponds East on March 5th beginning at 4:15pm.  Current and past fans are encouraged to come out and support the "Old Timers" as they look to improve their record.  The alumni team will be anchored with the likes of Bruce Cross, Dr. Dean Trevlyn, and Ed Bialas.  Current alumni should RSVP to the following address:  alumni@dickinsoncollegehockey.com

University of Maryland Captures 2010-11 Championship
The Terps beat Gettysburg in the Mason Dixon League Championship game played Sunday (2/13) at Hersheypark Arena.  Despite Maryland putting themselves in a comfortable 3 goal lead early on, Gettysburg battled back to tie the game in the closing minutes of the 3rd period.  With the game going to overtime, Maryland wasted no time by scoring 1:13 into OT, giving them a 5-4 win and the championship.  Maryland's championship season was only one win from having a perfect season as Dickinson defeated the Terps, giving them their only loss of the year in regular season play.

Red Devils Tied Mount St. Mary's for Playoff Bid, but....
Amazingly, Dickinson and Mount St. Mary's tied in every sense of the word.  The Mason Dixon League has 5 distinct tie breaker scenerios when teams are tied for a playoff spot.  They are, the team with the most wins (each team had 4), head to head competition (series was split), team with least amount of forfeits (neither team forfeited), record versus higher seeded teams (each team had a win and a tie against higher teams).  The final determination is based on a higher goal differential.  This is where the Red Devils held out hope as Mount Saint Mary's had one game left agains the University of Maryland the week of playoffs.  If Maryland beat the Mount by 11 or more goals, Dickinson would win the tie breaker.  In the Maryland vs Mount game, Maryland was all over the Mount, and after the second period, they had a 9-0 lead to show for it.  Things were looking good for Dickinson, but in the final period, Mount Saint Mary's showed some life by scoring 3 goals, making the final score 13-3.  The 10 goal differential brought the 5th and final tie-break scenario to another dead even tie.  League officials were at a loss as to how the final tie breaker decision should be made.  Nothing had ever happened like this before in the history of the Mason Dixon League.  Eventually, the league used the old fashioned method that is still in use in programs from the ACHA to the NFL.  A simple coin toss became the final decision.  Unfortunately, the coin bounced Mount Saint Mary's way, and Dickinson was eliminated.  While it was a very upsetting way to have the season to end, the club accomplished many feats that were thought to be out of their reach.  After losing a combined 7 players to injury this year, the remaining players gutted it out and finished the season with a league record of 4-5-1, and an overall record of 6-6-1.  This was an improvment over last year's regular season record, and certainly gives the club something to build on for next year.  The Red Devils will have to make up for the loss of a very special senior class.  Colin Trevlyn, Keith McGovern, Alex Feldman, Michael Montross, and Phinneas Ellis will all graduate and head for higher goals.  Colin Trevlyn finished the season as the Mason Dixon League's top goal scorer.  Keith McGovern graduated after the fall semester, and is a big loss at defense.  Alex Feldman was the team's primary goalie and played his heart out every game.  Michael Montross and Phineas Ellis were late additions to the team, but were very supportive in their roles.  Montross quickly ended up on a power line, and served in special teams.  Dickinson will immediately begin rebuilding for next season.  If you are interested in participating in the Hockey Club, or if you know someone who might be, contact Coach Wolfe for additional information.

Dickinson Comes Up Short in Must Win Game
Saturday (2/5) night's game against Gettysburg was a must win game for the Red Devils and everyone in the locker room knew it.  The Devils played all season, and their fate came down to a single game against a conference rival that had already beaten them earlier in the year.  As the team took to the ice in warm-ups, it was immediately obvious that a lot of the success would be gauged on the team's fitness as Dickinson continues to battle a short bench due to several season ending injuries.  Unfortunately, the game got off to a rough start as Gettysburg took the opening faceoff and scored on their first shot, just 21 seconds into the game.  The Red Devils would not be discouraged though as Carson Drake netted a goal just 3 minutes later while Dickinson was on the penalty kill, netting the game at 1 goal a piece.  Gettysburg would then score two additional goals in the first period, one with only 2.1 seconds left, to give themselves a comfortable 3-1 lead.  As the Red Devils took to the ice in the second period, they knew they had to make up for a 2 goal differential, but Gettysburg kept the pressure up by scoring two additional unanswered goals to boost their lead to 5-1.  In the locker room after the second period, Dickinson knew their season could possibly be over in 20 minutes, but they wouldn't go without a fight.  Their fight paid off when senior Michael Montross scored half way through the final period after receiving a pass from Charlie Goldburg that cut the lead down to 3 goals with 10 minutes left.  As hard as they tried, the Red Devils could not muster another goal, and with a mere 3 seconds left in regulation, Gettysburg put the icing on the cake by scoring one last goal, giving the Bullets a 6-2 win.  Despite the loss, Coach Wolfe was pleased with the team's efforts.  "We had some real tough bounces go against us tonight.  We gave up three goals within the final minute of each period.  When that happens, it's hard to get the win no matter what else happens", Wolfe stated.  "We just didn't give our goalie enough support in front of the crease and Gettysburg capitalized."  Dickinson won't know their final fate until Tuesday (2/8) night's game between the University of Maryland and Mount Saint Marys.  Dickinson and the Mount are locked in a tie breaker situation, and the team's last hopes remain alive provided Maryland wins by 10+ goals over the Mount.

Red Devils Prepare for Gettysburg
Dickinson will play their biggest game of the year against Gettysburg this Saturday (2/5) against rival Gettysburg.  The two teams met earlier in the year where Gettysburg was able to pull off the win in a game that has been hard to forget by most of the team.  "We weren't ourselves", said Coach Wolfe, "we are a whole different team this time around."  If the past several games are any indicator, Dickinson is a whole new team as they have successfully defeated their opponents in their last 4 games.  However, Gettysburg has a desire to play the spoiler role, and they have a lot of reasons to do so.  Dickinson beat them last year to claim the Mason Dixon Leagues Championship, and the players from Gettysburg have not forgotten.  Despite already gaining a first round bye in this year's playoffs, Gettysburg can almost exhaust Dickinson's hopes for the last playoff spot if they beat the Red Devils.  Prior to the game, Gettysburg will have an alumni game on the ice, and several activities.  "We expect them to have a lot of fans there, but rather than be intimidated, I think our guys will feed off the noise", Wolfe commented.  Dickinson fans will be making the trip down I-83 also to show support for their favorite team.  If you are interested in attending, please contact a member of this year's team for additional details and/or directions.  Face-off is set for 7:30pm.

Dickinson Picks Up Another Non-League Win Against DeSales

As the the Red Devils continue to grasp at the last playoff spot in the Northern Division, they took on DeSales Saturday night (1/29) in a non-league game.  While this game was scheduled late last year, it came at a perfect time for Dickinson as they needed a "tune-up" game prior to this coming weekend's final regular season contest against Gettysburg.  The game had a lot of back and fourth movement in the first period that only saw one goal from either team as Dickinson's Carson Drake found the back of the net, after receiving a nice feed from defenseman Sam Mandle.  When the clubs hit the ice in the second period, it was all Dickinson.  The Red Devils scored 5 unanswered goals to put DeSales in a big hole.  Those goals came from Colin Trevlyn, who had two in the second, and from Charlie Goldberg who also had two goals of his own.  Carson Drake rounded out the second period by scoring his second goal fo the game.  With the strong second period, the Red Devils went into the locker room during intermission with a 6-0 lead.  After the break, DeSales found some life in their game by scoring 3 goals of their own, but Dickinson scored two additional goals by Greg Goldman and Sam Mandle, which sealed the win.  Dickinson will face their biggest challenge for the season this Saturday when they travel to the York Ice Arena to play rival Gettysburg in what will likely be the Red Devils only chance to secure a playoff birth.

Big Win Comes with a Big Loss
The Red Devils traveled to Fort Dupont on Saturday night (1/22) to take on South Division American University in a must win game in order to stay in the hunt for the last playoff position.  The odds were stacked against Dickinson from the start when they were forced to start the game with less than 2 offensive lines, and only 3 defensemen.  With such a short bench, American jumped out to an early lead and things looked grim for the Devils.  But somewhere in the frozen atmosphere of the Fort Dupont Rink, the Red Devils found the heart and spirit to put themselves back into contention by tying the game at 3 goals a piece after two periods.  The club was ragged and drained during the intermission, but everyone in the locker room knew that if they couldn't win the final 20 minutes of the game, that it would be lights out for their playoff chances.  With that knowledge, Senior Colin Trevlyn mustered an early shot against the American goalie to score the only goal of the 3rd period, and to give the Red Devils the much needed win that they so desperately needed.  But everything wasn't good news for the club.  With approximately 8 minutes left in regulation, standout Freshman Kyle Farina was charging over the offensive blue line when he collided with two American players resulting in a lower body injury that will keep Farina out for the remainder of the season.  While Coach Wolfe was satisfied with the team's performance, he was equally concerned with the loss of Farina.  "We have a tremendous freshman class this year, and Kyle stood out as being one of our team's up and coming leaders.  To lose him at this juncture certainly creates a hole in one of our top scoring lines, but at the same time, it opens up the door to his replacement at a crucial time in our season", Wolfe said.  Dickinson will continue to tune their game up this Saturday (1/29) when they take on DeSales in a non-league game at Twin Ponds West.  Face off is scheduled for 9:15pm.

Season Defining Moment to Come this Weekend
The hockey team has two league games remaining in their Mason Dixon League schedule.  With those games left, the Red Devils trail Mount Saint Marys by two points in order to win the last seed in the North Division playoff picture.  Mount Saint Marys has an extra game in hand, but they are facing the three top teams in the entire league to finish out their season.  Dickinson meanwhile, plays both American University (1/22), and Gettysburg (2/5) to finish their season.  If the Red Devils can win both games, they should be in a good position with a little help from Mount Saint Mary's competitors.  Stay tuned.....

Dickinson Shuts the Door on DeSales Late Game Rush
Dickinson Shuts the Door on DeSales Late Game RushDickinson made a trip up to the Lehigh Valley to play non-league opponent DeSales (12/11) in the first game of a home and home series this season against the Bulldogs.  While the first period consisted of back and fourth play, the Red Devils scored two quick goals in the last minute of play when Teddy Malley netted one with just 43 seconds left, and then Charlie Goldberg found the back of the net with a mere 4 seconds left in the first period.  The Bulldogs made it interesting by scoring two goals of their own in the second period, but Dickinson went into the locker from after two periods with a 3 to 2 lead.  In the third period, newcomer Patrick Haig scored a goal for the Red Devils to boot  the teams lead to two, but DeSales answered right back with a goal of their own to make it a 4 to 3 game with leass than 2 minutes to play.  DeSales pulled their goalie, and an onslaught of pucks made their way to Dickinson's senior goalie Alex Feldman who was able to save the win for the Red Devils.  Dickinson now heads into their winter break and will not play again until January 22nd.

Late Game Heroics Help the Devils Put Away Hopkins
The Red Devils made their way down Interstate 83 to Baltimore Saturday night (12/4) to play Johns Hopkins of the Southern Division.  Dickinson quickly jumped out to the lead as senior Teddy Malley netted a goal just a minute and sixteen seconds into the game after receiving a good pass from David Mann.  But in what has been typical of this season, the Devils surrendered the lead by letting the Blue Jays score two unanswered goals before the end of the first period.  Dickinson then came out strong in the second period, scoring the only two goals of the period with scores from Kyle Farina and Pat Superko (both Freshmen).  The Red Devils went into the locker room between the second and third period knowing that they were going to face an all out blitz from the Blue Jays to start the third.  To make matters worse, the Blue Jays would start the period on the power play due to a late call against defenseman Sam Silvershein at the end of the second.  Unfortunately for the Devils, Johns Hopkins efforts paid off during the first shift of the period as they scored a powerplay goal to knot the score at 3-3.  Both teams traded back and fourth shots throughout the period until Senior scoring leader Colin Trevlyn scored the game winner with 1:46 left in the game on an assist from familiar partner Carson Drake.  The win brings the Red Devil's conference record to 4-3-1 with only two conference games remaining.  Dickinson will travel to Allentown this weekend to face DeSales in a non-league matchup at 5:30pm this Saturday.

Mount Saint Marys Wins to Split Series
Following the Halloween Shoot-out with Mount Saint Mary's, everyone expected a high scoring game.  Those in attendance got their wishes, but unforunately it was the Devils that came up short in the final tally.  Mount Saint Marys got off to an early start in the first period when they jumped to a quick 3-0 lead before Senior Teddy Malley scored his first of two goals in the game.  Defensemen Sam Silvershein also scored for the Devils in the first, but the Devils trailed by a score of 4-2 after the first.  The second period resulted in more lopsided scoring as Mount Saint Mary's tallied 4 more goals to make the score 8-3 after two periods.  The club came alive in the third with goals from Pat Superko, Greg Goldman, and Charlie Goldberg, but it was too little to late as the final buzzer rang with Mount Saint Mary's winning 10-6.  The Dickinson team now goes on a lengthy road trip which will begin with a game at host Johns Hopkins this Saturday (12/4) beginning at 9:15pm.

The Battle of Gettysburg goes to the Bullets
Dickinson and Gettysburg played a rematch of last year's championship game and the action lived up to its pregame hype.  Gettysburg came into the game as the top team this year to play a young Dickinson club that is improving as each game passes.  While Gettysburg was the pregame favorite, the Red Devils came out flying and captured the first and only goal of the first period when the Mason Dixon League's leading scorer, Colin Trevlyn, put the puck past Gettysburg's netminder Jim Dornberger.  The first period lead wouldn't stand for long as it was all Gettysburg in the second period who scored three unanswered goals, with a total of 5 for the period.  Dickinson's lone score in the second happened when Carson Drake and Colin Trevlyn hooked up again to beat the Gettysburg goaltender.  Dickinson went into the locker room down 5 to 2, but they knew they had a golden opportunity when the third period would start because they were going to be on a two man advantage power play.  So just as planned, the Red Devils came out in the third and scored when Colin Trevlyn netted his second goal of the night to bring the club back within two.  Unfortunately though, Gettysburg failed to concede anymore of their lead as they scored the final two goals of the contest to win the game 7 to 3.  This loss dips the Red Devils to 2-3-1 in conference play and sets up a crucial win for next Saturday's (11/20) game against Mount Saint Marys.  Dickinson won their pervious game against The Mount during a wild offensive contest and hopes to get back on the winning track by lighting the lamp again this weekend.  The puck drops at 9:15pm.

Red Devil Skaters Can't Figure Out Susquehanna
Dickinson had their second opportunity to beat Susquehanna this season, but failed to do so by giving up the first 5 goals to the team from Selinsgrove this past Saturday (11/6).  The Red Devils briefley woke up in the second period by scoring 3 unanswered goals of their own, pulling them within two scores, but Susquehannas would answer with a late 2nd period goal to go into the locker room at break, leading by a score of 6-3.  The Red Devils have shown that they can dig it out to win in the 3rd period this year, but on this night, Susquehanna would keep them from finding their grove as Susquehanna posted and additional 3 goals to close out the Red Devils in their final regular season game against Susquehanna by a score of 8-3.  Senior Alex Feldman had a busy night in net as the Red Devils were outshot by their opponent by a total of 63 shots to 30.  The Red Devils that scored  for the home team included Colin Trevlyn who had assists from Teddy Malley and Carson Drake.  Defenseman Keith McGovern scored with an assist going to fellow defenseman David Mann.  And Charlie Goldburg rounded out the scoring by when he put the puck by the Susquehanna goalie giving an assist to Kyle Farina.  Dickinson has an even harder battle to prepare for this coming weekend when they take on Gettysburg College in a rematch of last year's Mason Dixon League Championship game whereby the Devils claimed victory.  Face off is scheduled for 9:15pm at Twin Ponds West in Mechanicsburg.  Come out and see your Red Devils in action.

Dickinson Survives a Wild Offensive Battle for Second Straight Win
The Red Devils traveled to Frederick Maryland on Sunday (10/31) for a little "trick or treat" action by taking on Mount Saint Marys in their first meeting of the season.  The game ended up being an all offensive match, leaving the spectators who wanted to see goals more than happy.  Both teams combined for a total of 117 shots and 21 goals.  The scoring started just a forty seconds into the game when Mount Saint Marys scored the opening goal.  Dickinson answered back a minute and twenty seconds later, and with that, the flood gates opened.  The teams ended the first period with 6 goals each.  The second period was slightly calmer with only 4 additional goals, and the Red Devils went into the locker room with a 9 to 7 lead.  During the intermission, Dickinson knew that a two goal lead in a shoot-out style game wasn't safe, so the Red Devils proceeded to go out in the 3rd and final period and score an additional 3 goals to win their second game in a row by a final of 12 to 9.  Not only were their 21 total goals, but the production came from everywhere.  A total of 14 different players from both teams scored in the contest, including Dickinson's Colin Trevlyn who scored his second hat trick in the season in as many games.  Coach Tom Wolfe put it best when he said, "when your goalie (Alex Feldman) has two assists, you know it's one of those games where the last team shooting the puck has a chance of winning."  In addition to Trevlyn's hat trick, the following Red Devils contributed with goals; David Mann (2), Charlie Goldburg (2), Teddy Malley (2), Carson Drake,  Greg Goldman, and Kyle Farina.  Dickinson will play undefeated Susquehanna at home in their next game, Saturday 11/6 at 9:15.  Susquehanna took the first game earlier in the season, but Dickinson has fine tuned many aspects of their game since that outing.

Trevlyn's Hat Trick Leads to Win Over Maryland
Saturday night's (10/23) game against the Univeristy of Maryland resulted in the Devils first win this season.  The Red Devils opened up the scoring just 15 seconds into the game when Teddy Malley slipped the puck past the Maryland goalie for a lead that the team would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.  Less than 2 minutes later, Senior Colin Trevlyn netted his first goal of three on the night, giving the club a quick 2-0 lead.  But Maryland's team failed to give up as they kept responding to each of Dickinson's goals.  After a wild first period that saw a total of 5 goals scored, the Red Devils continued to lead by 3-2.  During the second period, Dickinson had the lone goal and went into the locker room with a comfortable 4-2 lead.  But Maryland would come out in the 3rd period and tested the home club by outshooting the devils 18 shots to 9.  Fortunately for Dickinson, Red Devil's goalie Alex Feldman was up to the challenge as he made 17 saves in the third period to preserve the win.  The final score of the game was 5-3.  Dickinson will travel to Fredrick Maryland next Sunday to take on Mount Saint Mary's at 3:00pm.

Red Devils Fail to Capitalize
On a rare Sunday trip to Sunbury, the Red Devils gathered to take on the Mason Dixon League's second newest team in as many weeks.  Despite preparing for the game against Susquehanna, the team lost by a staggering margin of 10 to 4.  The Devils never got their offense clicking and Susquehanna quickly took advantage of the sputtering team to post 6 or the game's first 7 goals.  "It was very disappointing to come out as flat as we were", stated Coach Tom Wolfe.  "When you're down 9 to 2 after the 2nd period, there's really only one thing to do and that's to simply win a single period to prove we can handle the competition."  And that's exactly what Dickinson did in the third and final period.  Knowing that digging out of a 7 goal deficit was near impossible, the team made it a point to play a hard 3rd period by outscoring Susquehanna 2 to 1 in the final stanza.  Despite the loss, there were some bright points.  Senior Colin Trevlyn scored two goals, bringing him up to 4 goals in the past 3 games.  In addition, Freshman Charlie Goldberg found the back of the net towards the end of the game, scoring his first goal as a Red Devil.
The team is not scheduled to play again until they meet the University of Maryland on October 23rd at home.  Game time is 9:15pm.

Dickinson Ties Wesley in Injury Plagued Game

The team will not get a lot of time to recover from their injury plagued game as they will have two practices early this week before heading to Sunbury, PA, to play another new new team to the league, Susquehanna University.

Red Devils Dig Themelves into an early Hole
The hockey club opened up their 2010-11 season Saturday night (9/25) with a 6-3 loss to the hands of Shippensburg.  Their tentative start resulted in giving up 3 quick goals early on in the first period before senior Colin Trevlyn found the back of Ship's net with 3:47 left to play in the first period to give Dickinson their first goal of the year.  The Red Devils then took advantage of that momentum to score two quick goals by Carson Drake and Pat Superko in the start of the second period to tie the game.  After that, the wheels fell off and Dickinson proceeded to give up 3 more unanswered goals to give Shippensburg the win.

A consistent flow of penalties kept the team from ever getting into a groove.  The club found themselves two men down several times in the later part of the game, relying heavily on the Red Devils goaltender, Alex Feldman, who had 35 saves in the game.

Activity Night Provides Big Numbers
The hockey club provided an information booth during the fall "Activity Night" on September 2nd.  During the evening, 16 incoming freshman expressed an interest in participating in the club.  A formal meeting will be held in the upcoming week to finalize the required documents and certifications.  Then it's off to the rink for the first practice which will be on September 13th.  If you or somone you know is interested in the program and you didn't have an opportunity to come to Activity Night, contact Coach Wolfe or one of the student officers listed on the contact page.

Jack Lyon's Showcase Tournament a Success

The 11th College Showcase was held on 7/24 at the Ice Line Quad Rinks in West Chester, Pa.
This was Dickinson's first time at the showcase, and coaches Tom Wolfe and Bob Swartz both expressed that this was a success.  The showcase featured approximately 80 players primarely from the tri-state area.  "These young men are fortunate to have an opportunity to gather information on area college teams.  While it may not be the deciding aspect of their choice, they may end up leaning one way or the other if one particular school has a little better program than the next", stated Coach Wolfe.  Several current high school juniors and seniors made their way to Dickinson's information table where they had the opportuinty to not only speak with the coaching staff, but also with Club President Colin Trevlyn who was able to answer several questions from a student's perspective..

Dickinson Renews Game and Practice Contracts with Twin Ponds

The club is pleased to announce that they will remain at the Twin Ponds facilities for the 2010-11 season.  The team has secured home game ice slots for TPW (Mechanicsburg) that will primarily be Saturday evening games.  This is good news to Dickinson's fan base as the travel time is very limited.  The club will be splitting their practices between the East and West locations beginning in the first week of September.

Tom Wolfe Named as New Head Coach

The hockey club is pleased to announce that Tom Wolfe has accepted the job of head coach for the team's upcoming 2010-11 season.  Wolfe has over 25 years of hockey experience which includes playing through the collegiate level at IUP, to coaching various youth teams including the Hershey Junior Bears and the Lower Dauphin Falcons.  "Hockey has been a big part of my life and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to bring my knowledge of this great sport to a fine institution."  Wolfe's first year at the helm comes on the heels of a very successful season for Dickinson, whereby they won the MDCHA divsion.  "I have some big shoes to fill following previous coach Dave Emerick."  "Dave, who is a Dickinson Alumni, really had some good things going for this club, and I can only hope to improve on the solid foundation that he layed," said Wolfe.  Coach Wolfe stated that he will be relying heavily on his two young team officers of Colin Trevlyn and Dan Conant to make the transition smooth.  In addition, Wolfe is bringing a familar face with him to assist in the coaching duties as Bob Swartz will be coming on board as well.  "Swartzy has been with me as an assistant for the last 6 years and brings a lot of confidence with him", said Wolfe.
